WhatIWore: I know I know, you might be thinking, dang girl, didn’t you wear dark flares in last week’s outfit post and the answer is yes. But these are different! They’re different because I made them! Myself! I’m so on this 70s kick right now and I couldn’t fit the ultra high rise I wanted available in my budget so I thought, what the heck? Let’s do this. Felix was also on a visit to his grandparents house and Adam had Bea all morning so I managed to get them done in one sitting (I had cut them out the night before).

I’m still trying to figure out the right kind of top to wear to show off the waist - paired with my chest it’s a bit of a proportional challenge. But as I said earlier this summer, I’m not going to let these tatas stop me from wearing things I like! For this outfit I picked one of my cotton eyelet tops which was enhanced by layering over the dark denim.

Sewing Notes

Now some fit and sewing notes on the jeans! I love the ultra high rise - it’s about 12.5″ - higher than anything I’ve seen online. To carry on with that retro look, I used a traditional gold thread on a 11.5 oz dark 100% cotton denim that I bought at JoAnn Fabrics. Remember my old living room couch that I reupholstered (and then became my headboard?) I used the same denim there too! I thought I had leftover in storage but couldn’t find it and wanted to make use of my free weekend so just went and bought more. I bought 2 ¼ yards but I could have easily gotten away with under two (on 60″ wide fabric).

I first made a muslin mock up and determined I needed to size down (I ended up cutting a 10) and take in the knee to create more of a flare. I didn’t do a second muslin because I was just too excited to get rolling.

It took me a little under six hours from start to finish and I think would have gone smoother if I a) didn’t have bobbin tension issues on my machine b) didn’t run out of thread or have to rewind my bobbin three times and c) have to rip out and reinsert the lapped zipper.  On the zipper I decided to switch to a matching navy thread instead of the gold so both sides would be more symmetrical.

After I had the jeans hemmed and complete I took some of Adam’s rough grain sandpaper, sat down and brushed where the natural whiskers of the jeans would be. I also brushed down the top of my thighs, the pocket and hem edges. Did you know most denim starts out this color and through a process of abrasion and chemical treatments it becomes the colors you see at the store! I hope this pair eventually has a worn in but dark denim look.

Fun Fact: I used to work in the apparel industry and got to see first hand how these processes are done when I traveled to our factories overseas!

My final takeaway - these are a good start! Next time I know I want to fit the thigh a little closer, especially if I work in 100% cotton. They stretched out a little too fast for my liking but I also don’t like looking stuffed into my jeans so I need to find the right in between fit.  Alterations aren’t my strong suit, so if any of you reading this have some good tips on getting that back leg under the butt area (technical term) right, please help a sister out! Now that I’ve had a practice pair, I think I’ll probably buy some nice denim online and make another version but with different style front and back pockets. I also have yardage in a gorgeous rusty brown that will look sooo 70s (and I think I could knock out over the course of a couple evenings after the kids are in bed). All in all - I’m pleased!

Cultivating Your Personal Style | Maximizing Your Current Closet

How to Maximize your Current Closet

Now that I have my mood boards handy, I can check out my own closet to see what items I can highlight this fall. It’s important for me to be very clear and stress that I do NOT buy a full wardrobe of all new clothes each season! I don’t have the budget or the desire to start over from scratch. I have my core closet of basics all set and ready to go plus the items you’ll see below. Two of the things I know I’ll be adding to my wardrobe are this spice toned suede jacket and I bought fabric to make some amazing rust colored high waisted flares (wish me luck!). I also bought this Free People dress for a possible wedding guest outfit and it was too small in the lower ribs. Waiting until the end of my Whole30 to see if it fits or if I need to size up!

Ok! Let’s talk about favorites I’ve already got and can’t wait to wear to fit my seventies throwback theme!

Shearling Jacket

Shearling Jacket

I made this beauty last fall when I was pregnant and I think it will be so cute over the Free People dress or with a navy turtleneck and those rust flares. And I’ll definitely repeat it just as you see here (with regular jeans instead of maternity of course!). Simply said - it’s a great neutral that’s going to get a lot of milage!

Fringe Leather Bag

I bought this beauty during the Nordstrom Sale a few years ago and it’s one of my most used handbags. I love the color and style and it’s big enough for a couple diapers, wipes and my wallet. I rarely carry a diaper bag at all actually! Anyway, this will look great with my new thrifted boots as well as others already in my closet.

Shearling Jacket

Navy Peacoat

Say 1970s and I’ll instantly think of one of my favorite movies - Love Story. Ali McGraw wears a navy peacoat and it’s such a great classic. It works as easily with modern looks as it does more vintage styled outfits. I like navy because of how it works with so many other colors in my closet!

Cream Cable Turtleneck

This is another classic that looks great with just about every jacket or pair of pants in my closet. It’ll be worn a lot - just like in years past!

Dark Denim Flares

High Waisted Dark Denim

I love these Frame jeans (I wore this over the weekend which you can see here) because they make my legs look super long and the stretch fabric makes them comfortable! Also - they go with just about everything!

Vintage Camel Cape

Camel Cape

This vintage cape is best suited for days when I’m not holding kids (cause let’s be real, capes are not easy with full hands), but I like this piece a lot!

Vintage Leather Jacket

Oxblood Vintage Leather Crop Jacket

I can still remember buying this piece at a Fort Wayne Goodwill over 15 years ago! It’s gotten a makeover (it was originally a long coat) but I wear it a lot more cropped off. I like the wide collar and braided details!

Denim Skirt

High Waisted Denim Skirt

I want to give this skirt a little more love this season. Obviously it didn’t work for me when I was pregnant last year, but I think paired with boots and a hippy-esque boots it would be super cute at some end of the summer barbecues.

High Waisted Jeans

High Waisted Button Front Jeans

Ugh. These jeans got misplaced during our move and they are the one thing I wish I could find most! The rise is so cute and I hope I can even tailor them in a little bit for a more defined waist.

Maxi Dress

Navy Ditty Print Maxi Dress

One of my all time favorite dresses (see all of the ways I’ve worn it here) will absolutely be worn a bunch this fall. I think I’ll give it a new look by wearing it with the suede jacket I mentioned above with a navy floppy hat.

Vintage Purple Jacket

Purple Printed Chiffon Dress

Here’s another dress I can’t wait to pair with the suede moto jacket and boots for a kid free afternoon or evening.

These aren’t the only pieces I’m excited to feature, but they are a good start! I have some vintage sweaters and printed skirts and dresses I hope I fit into soon too!

For the final portion of this series, I’ll recap the pieces I’ve put on my wishlist and more ideas for how I’ll style them up! Stay tuned!

Phew! Let me back up a little and fess up a bit. We have not been super strict on a couple things like mayo, bacon or deli meat. Sure - we could be die hards, but we feel like this is a pretty big challenge as is and are cutting ourselves a bit of slack for trace amounts of noncompliant ingredients.

Speaking of ingredients, how about a shopping list! Drumroll please…

Grocery List

Meats:

  • Chicken Breasts (8 total)
  • Chorizo (1 pound)
  • Ground Turkey (2 pounds light, 2 pounds dark)
  • Smoked Deli Turkey Breast (½ pound)*

  • Hoosier Strip Steaks (1 pound)
  • Pulled Pork (1 pound)
  • Bacon (1 pound)*

Fruits and Berries

  • Green Apples (4)

  • Small Tomatoes (quart)

  • Basil (homegrown)

Pantry Items

  • Sunbutter
  • Sliced Almonds
  • Pecans
  • Unsweetened Coconut Flakes

  • Chia Seeds
  • Date Balls covered in almonds
  • Le Croix (2 cases)

Other:

  • Ghee
  • Eggs (3 dozen)

We did one big shopping trip at the start of the week, then again four days later, plus a stop at the farmer’s market on Saturday. In addition to the list above was kids’ stuff, but they aren’t doing the Whole 30 so I’ve omitted it. Our spending was up this week, but we won’t need to buy more expensive items (like ghee, coconut oil, olive oil) every week. Now our fridge is so beautifully organized and clean, which makes it easy to grab what we need and see all of our options! We’ve eaten a lot of leftovers and really been good about not wasting food!

Meal wise we’re loving this! Kitchen time wise - ehh - I’m really glad I have a partner in cooking and cleaning up. Otherwise I don’t think I could handle the extra work of cooking three meals a day with two kids underfoot. It does help to prep ahead of time and leftovers are a Godsend.

Onwards to Week Two!

WhatIWore: Here’s what I wore over the weekend to hit up the Goodwill 50% sale and the farmer’s market with my family. I’ve had a little pep in my step lately and have been a lot more inspired to put on an outfit, rather than just throwing on whatever (like a tee shirt and jean shorts). I’ve been going through my clothing in storage and found this top, which was the beginning of this whole outfit. it’s actually almost exactly like this one, the difference being my new boots instead of sandals.

And by new, I mean the pair I picked up for $6 the other day on a thrifting trip. Ahhh! Can you believe it? They’re real leather, fit great and are going to look perfect with my seventies themed fall wardrobe. I even started spiffing them up this weekend and I love the results.
